About “In-Field Studio”

“In-Field Studio” is a workshop / an experimental school in which the participants try to read and record the local landscape to enhance their imagination and practical skills to contribute to the relationship between the human life and landscape.

We, “In-Field Studio”, held international workshops three times in the city of Vadodara (Baroda) in the west of India, together with the students from India and Japan. In 2016, We proposed a preservation and revitalization plan for a traditional heritage and a its surrounding community around in the city of Vadodara.

In 2017, we would like to move into a rural village area, and try to capture the possibilities of the relationships between the human civilization and the natural environment. In Santiniketan, an inland area of Bengal, a small experimental school “Brahmacharyasrama” was founded by Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) in 1901 with just five students and five teachers. Classes were held in open air in the shades of trees. The intention of Rabindranath Tagore was also to preserve and revitalize the culture and the economy of the rural villages. It was the children in the villages who joined the program of the school. The school changed into a central university “Visva-Bharati” in 1951. The educational environment where human and nature are connected by harmonious relationship is still continued today. In the villages of Santiniketan and Sriniketan, one would observe an artistic atmosphere that is generated at the school spontaneous concord between the village life and an aesthetic feeling.

It is what R.Tagore envisioned for a human life, and is connected to Tenshin (Kakuzo) Okakura’ s vision of “the comprehensive arts” , and then with Kenji Miyazawa’ s “Farmers’ Arts” theory. Through “In-Field Studio”, we will try to link our contemporary activities to the great intellectual legacies of the past and further develop them to the next stage.

“In-Field Studio”
